This course is the first in a series of three online (Moodle-based) courses designed for educators seeking the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Add-On Endorsement in Florida. It is a required prerequisite for the remaining two courses in the series.

Eligibility Requirements:
Participants must hold current ESE certification and have access to students across the autism spectrum. If you are a self-contained teacher, you must also work with students in inclusive settings. Please coordinate with colleagues or local schools to ensure appropriate student interaction opportunities are available.

Course Overview:
This course provides educators with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to understand and support students with autism spectrum disorder. Key topics include:

·         Characteristics and needs of individuals with ASD

·         Evidence-based instructional practices

·         Sensory processing differences

·         Development of high-quality IEPs

As part of the course requirements, educators must work with students across the autism spectrum. If you teach in a self-contained setting, you will also need access to students in inclusive environments. Please plan ahead by connecting with colleagues or schools in your area to arrange appropriate student engagement opportunities.

Course Overview:
This course explores the principles and practices of applied behavior analysis and the application in supporting students with ASD. Participants will learn how to:

• Apply techniques to teach communication, social, and academic skills

• Implement positive behavior supports to improve student outcomes

• Address challenging behaviors in educational settings

This course focuses on the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems and Assistive/Instructional Technology (AT/IT) to support students with ASD. Participants will learn to:

• Assess and analyze individual communication needs

• Design and implement strategies to support communication through AAC and AT

• Explore a variety of tools and interventions that enhance access to instruction and communication

• Understand the role of assistive technology in transition planning for students with ASD
